Interior Design & AI

April 3, 2026

There are now dozens of AI interior design tools on the market, and if you've tried to figure out which one to use, you've probably been overwhelmed by marketing pages that all say the same thing: “Transform your room in seconds with AI!” Cool. But which one actually does it well?

We tested eight of the most popular AI interior design tools using the same three rooms: a dated living room, a basic bedroom, and a small kitchen. We evaluated each on quality of output, ease of use, speed, available styles, and pricing. Here's what we found.

Full disclosure: Intirear is our product, so we obviously have a bias. We'll be as fair as possible, and you can verify our claims by trying any of these tools yourself.

What We Tested

For each tool, we uploaded the same three photos and selected the closest equivalent of “modern” and “Scandinavian” styles. We evaluated:

  • Output quality: How realistic and usable is the generated image?
  • Room understanding: Does the AI maintain the room's actual structure and proportions?
  • Style accuracy: Does “Scandinavian” actually look Scandinavian?
  • Speed: How long from upload to result?
  • Ease of use: Can a non-technical person figure it out in under 2 minutes?
  • Pricing: What do you actually pay for meaningful use?

The Results

1. Intirear

Output quality:High. The images are photorealistic and maintain room proportions well. Lighting in the generated images matches the original photo's conditions, which is a detail many competitors miss.

Room understanding: Strong. Accurately detects walls, windows, floor type, and room geometry. Occasionally struggles with very unusual room shapes, but handles standard rooms well.

Style accuracy:Very good across the style range. The Scandinavian output actually looks Scandinavian (warm wood, light palette, texture) rather than just “generic modern.”

Speed: Results in 15-30 seconds typically.

Ease of use:Very simple. Upload, pick style, get result. The built-in AI chat for follow-up questions is a differentiator — you can ask “what paint color would achieve this look?” and get actionable answers.

Pricing: Free tier available. Paid plans start at $5/month.

Best for: Homeowners who want quick, high-quality visualizations with follow-up guidance. The combination of image generation and AI chat makes it more of a design assistant than just a rendering tool.

2. RoomGPT

Output quality: Decent. Results are recognizably the same room, but the furniture placements can feel generic. Good enough for inspiration, not quite good enough for precise planning.

Room understanding: Average. Handles simple rooms well but gets confused by rooms with complex geometry or unusual features.

Style accuracy: Reasonable. Styles are distinguishable from each other but can feel samey across different rooms.

Speed: 20-45 seconds.

Ease of use: Very straightforward. One of the simplest interfaces.

Pricing: Free tier with limited uses. Pro plans from $9/month.

Best for:Quick style exploration when you don't need high-fidelity results.

3. Interior AI

Output quality: Good overall with occasional misses. Some generated images look great, others have noticeable artifacts or proportional oddities.

Room understanding: Above average. Good at maintaining architectural features.

Style accuracy: Solid. Wide range of styles available.

Speed: 30-60 seconds.

Ease of use: Clean interface with good onboarding.

Pricing: Starts at $19/month for meaningful use.

Best for: Users who want more control over specific elements of the redesign.

4. Reimagine Home

Output quality: Medium. Results are usable for inspiration but not detailed enough for planning.

Room understanding: Basic. Struggles with complex rooms and sometimes misidentifies room elements.

Style accuracy: Limited style range. The available styles cover basics but lack nuance.

Speed: 15-30 seconds.

Ease of use: Very easy.

Pricing: Free with limited credits. Paid plans from $12/month.

Best for:Casual use when you just want a quick “what if.”

5-8. Others Tested: DecorAI, Planner 5D AI, AI Room Planner, HomeDesigns AI

We tested four additional tools that didn't stand out enough for individual deep-dives. Common patterns: slower generation times (60+ seconds), less realistic outputs, limited free tiers, and style options that didn't feel meaningfully different from each other. Planner 5D's AI features are an add-on to their existing floor plan tool, which is useful if you need floor planning capabilities. The others were largely interchangeable in our testing.

Our Honest Take

The AI interior design space has matured significantly in the past year. Most tools produce usable results for basic style exploration. The differentiators are now:

  • Output consistency: Can you reliably get good results, or is it hit-or-miss?
  • Style depth: Does “modern” look different from “contemporary” or are they basically the same?
  • Beyond the image: What do you get after the visualization? Guidance? Product suggestions? Follow-up tools?
  • Pricing fairness: Some tools charge $20+/month for what others offer for $5.

Which One Should You Try?

If you're just curious and want to see one quick transformation: try whichever has the most generous free tier. If you're actually planning a project and want reliable, high-quality visualizations with design guidance: we think Intirear offers the best combination of quality and value, but we acknowledge our bias and encourage you to compare.

The good news is that most of these tools offer free trials or free tiers, so you can test two or three with your own room photos and decide for yourself. Your room, your standards, your call.
